Wedding in Slovenia at the Predjama Castle

Less than 10 kilometers from Postojna, hidden in the middle of the forests of the Notranjska region, the Predjama Castle has stood proudly in its vertical cliff face for over 700 years. This unique medieval castle will welcome you into its lofty halls and conjure up a fairy-tale atmosphere for the start of your wedding celebration.

Wedding venue

The picturesque Predjama Castle is perched high on a cliff not far from the world famous Postojna Cave. For more than 700 years, the castle has been guarding its surroundings and the underground cave system just below it.

By far the most famous inhabitant of the Predjama Castle was the knight Erazem of Predjama. Numerous legends talk about his life and one could say he was the Slovenian Robin Hood. Erazem rebelled against the Emperor of Austria, he robbed the rich and handed the loot over to the poor. When the Emperor attacked his castle, it proved impregnable for months. Erazem was daring; he left the castle through a secret cave system and was even showering the soldiers around the castle with fresh cherries to show them that he could leave the castle whenever he pleased. But his life ended tragically. One of his servants betrayed him and gave the soldiers a sign when Erazem went to the toilet. When that moment came, the soldiers killed him with a single cannon ball and the errant knight was literally caught with his pants down.

Today the Predjama Castle hosts a museum. From May to September it is also possible to visit the picturesque cave under the castle.

The former inhabitants of the castle come to life before your eyes and welcome you warmly even before you enter the castle. The host is, of course, the famous Erazem of Predjama, accompanied by two ladies and their maids bearing garlands of flowers and escorted by gallant knights with their swords.

A special feature of the medieval wedding ceremony is the ancient custom of weaving a lock of the bridegroom's hair into the bride's wedding ribbon and a small gift befitting the occasion for the bride.

After the civil wedding, we will have another festive ceremony where the bride will make her husband her personal knight.

If required, the medieval ceremony can be spiced up with the ritual of the 'knight's barrier', where the bride chooses a knight to fight for her favor. We will then conjure up an enthralling sword-fighting spectacle featuring 20 combatants.
